Writing a transgender character.

In Algonquin Highway, the last time Alex saw her girlfriend Nicky was five years ago. Now, Alex finds Nicky now presents as Nic, a transgender man.

I thought a lot about writing this character, not the least of which was my right to write as a playwright about someone outside my own lived experiences. Finally, I concluded I needed to be respectful and tell the story of a person, of whom being a transgender man is a part.
